The most talked-about technology of the moment has been in existence since the 1950s – learn more!
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has never been more in the spotlight. There is much discussion about how it will dominate the future, becoming increasingly advanced and human-like in intelligence. But did you know that this technology has existed since the 1950s? Of course, AI has undergone many transformations and has various applications today. However, the concept remains the same: it is the area of science that aims to develop intelligent machines, ones that can solve problems previously only solvable by the human mind.
It operates through an algorithm, learning from the user to optimize responses and deliver its function more efficiently. The instructions followed by the software can be directed towards various areas. One of them is social media activity: AI is responsible for collecting user data, analyzing the content they engage with the most, and delivering posts that align with what they want to see – or even more, products the user wants to buy and solutions to problems they may not have known they had but are tracked by the technology.
Origin of Artificial Intelligence
Alan Turing (1912-1954), a British mathematician, developed some concepts in the 1930s that align with what became AI. He is considered the father of computing because, during World War II, he developed a programming model that became the basis for software and advocated the concept of intelligent machines. Additionally, he became known for working on breaking encrypted messages from the German army, the wartime rival, which later evolved into the creation of algorithms and cryptography.
Later, in 1956, American computer scientist and professor John McCarthy used the term "artificial intelligence" for the first time at the Dartmouth Conference. Along with researchers Oliver Selfridge, Marvin Minsky, and Trenchard More, he initiated an extensive discussion on automation and components of intelligence that could be attributed to machines. In the conference invitation, they proposed the first research on the topic and described it as follows: convite dessa conferência, eles propuseram a primeira pesquisa sobre o tema e assim o descreveram:
"The study is based on the idea that every aspect of learning or any feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it. An attempt will be made to find out how to make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve problems set for them by human beings, and improve themselves."
In the following years, artificial intelligence continued to improve and become even more intelligent, as the name suggests. Through the concept of machine learning, which is how machines and software learn from the user, applications, social networks, intelligent devices, and even more advanced forms of artificial intelligence using facial and voice recognition were developed.
What to expect from AI and the future of technology?
The current discussion is how artificial intelligence will develop in the future. With the speed of digital transformation, it is safe to say that much is already underway, such as the use of this technology in chatbots and the much-discussed ChatGPT, smart appliances that understand the user, the metaverse, and many other applications.
While AI points to increased productivity, as in the case of recruitment processes – the feature streamlines profile selection, tests for candidates, and interview scheduling, for example – there is a concern about increasing social inequality and eliminating some manual labor, as in very manual activities. However, technology cannot be ignored, and the sooner society adapts to what is to come, the greater the benefit.
